Ballet and me in several pictures
About author
Miroslav Cupara is one of those rare people, I would say, of the Renaissance character which extended their talent to numerous musical directions. Whether it is a punishment or fate, only he and those similar to him who followed the same paths know. He is an excellent pianist, imaginative improviser, dependable accompanist, composer and much more, with which wider musical circles are not so familiar. Perhaps this book arose from Cupara’s need to reveal us his ‘secret’ world of musical ambition and share it with us. His need to convey its experiences was shared by many but his wish to generously present his professional secrets and tricks to the public, I consider a virtue and ‘chivalry’ that almost disappeared nowadays. In this musical comprehensiveness, one particularly sincere note crystallized nevertheless, through which this noble musician is looking for and finding a place to convey his musical message.

You wonder why getting into ballet happened to you. I say nothing is random, and I genuinely believe in it.
Miroslav Cupara is an excellent pianist. He senses motion and knows how to follow dancers. Following the motion is very important to us, the ballet dancers, and further its fusion with music into a unique element. We learn it and understand that relationship in ballet school from ballet teachers and accompanist.
Miroslav Cupara’s interpretation allows us to look for the body motions that are more unconstrained and richer, those that can express a multitude of thoughts, feelings and aspirations of a modern man and his life.

The artist, a colleague, someone who wanders between times in quest of his independence, gradually becoming liberated for all that he is listening to within himself.
He leaves us with what is the brightest of all: creativity, exploration, and beauty of the artistic soul that excites and inspires by its ideas, courage and rare sense of humour in a special way, intended only for few.
Getting to know such individuality is both privilege and fortune, and the music he creates, replenish me with hope that the creation is the very idea of life and as such it releases an eternity, leaving tiny clues to the next existences.

I met Miroslav when I was still a pupil in ‘Josip Slavenski’ music school. At that time, my, in those days, inseparable friend Andrej Stefanovic and me were the only ones and a bit lonely in expeditions and search for music genres other than classical. It was then that Miroslav appeared and we immediately acknowledged each other and realized that we found one more who HEARD THE MUSIC!!!
And by some unwritten rule, we became the THREE MUSKETEERS.
Yet from the very beginning Miroslav was enthusiastic about jazz and I was convinced that something will come out of it one day.
I wasn’t wrong!
Today, after so many years, I am listening with pleasure to his going through the most beautiful tones of jazz piano with ease and technical sophistication and I remember with joy many days and hours we spent playing music together.
Miroslav, musician of great intuition, perfect understanding of styles and harmony, pianist, arranger, composer, ‘band leader’… Miroslav MY FRIEND!!!

I was engaged as a duet dance teacher in the ballet school “Lujo Davico. My associates – accompanists were mostly old-school musicians who played classical and ballet music repertoire.
One year, an accompanist, young pianist Miroslav Cupara, was assigned to me. We instantly acknowledged each other and duet dance classes acquired much more jovial and pleasant atmosphere to work.
Miroslav used jazz, contemporary authors or improvised in his unique way which refined lessons and gave them a new appearance. This was best seen in the work of students who enjoyed the classes and presented even better results in performing given ballet combination. I therefore owe Miroslav an immense gratitude for the cooperation and wonderful professional companionship and the results achieved.
